Summer Classes

My schedule at Century City will remain the same, but I’m adding a 12pm class at Equinox Santa Monica on Thursday’s!

I will also be teaching a sunset mat class at Hotel Casa Del Mar Tuesday nights at 6:30pm starting July 14th for the summer. SO GORGEOUS, if you’re in socal, come take class over looking the ocean.

Inka Fly ‘n Flow

All hot fitness is ‘anti-gravity’ right now. Although Equinox Century City has had Gravity and Inka for over 2 years now, the mainstream mags and fitness community are starting to take notice.

Here’s the link to the write up on our Fly ‘n Flow Inka class at Century City here page 32

Not only are these workouts ridiculously fun, they combine all the things you love, real, functional strength, stabilizers gallore and core……which is why some people stay away from the classes, they’re tough. All the more reason to love them. Our version, INKA, is based on workouts that Inkan warriors did, hanging and swinging from vines. There are recognizable aspects to it, great lunges, clean rotations, a ton of lat and triceps work and for those of us who love pilates, a fun version of the roll-up and the series of 5!

Check out Equinox’s schedules online for Century City and Southbay, where INKA is taught here

July issue of SELF - the LA issue.

Not sure if it’s on newstands, but those of you who get a subscription, it’s out!
The article I contributed to is on page 31. Very cool!

Disc Jockey is BACK

I’m writing out the official training format to train teachers to teach Disc Jockey. This format will be in Pasadena, Century City and Santa Monica Equinox beginning July 6th.

Tomorrow I train the teachers, for some of them it’s a brush up, for other’s it’ll be the first time they’ve seen it…..how fun! I love teacher trainings. I’m so excited to share this format!

I love the playlist as much as the choreography, i may even post it.

Disc Jockey

I’m doing a training of my Disc Jockey format on Monday for additinoal instructors! The format will be on the scheudle at 3 Equinox locations this Summer, Beginning July 6th; Pasadena, Century City and Santa Monica.

If it goes well, it could be a regional or even a national format for our clubs. COOL!

I Love Kettlebells!

A big thank you and shout out to Matt Berenc, Personal Training Manager at Equinox Century City for the incredible Kettlebell workouts this week!
I have taken a few group fitness classes before with tthem, that I LOVED, but this really ups the adoration quotient.
I’m sore, but not miserable, and it’s mostly in my inner thighs. (all women rejoice for the soreness in their adductors;) We can’t help it. Pretty sure it’s genetic.)
The best part is that it’s fluid movement! I think it’s a lovely match for a pilates workout. concentric, power movement. I’m hooked!

Discounts for Fitness Professionals

Very cool! This is the most extensive and comprehensive list I’ve seen in one place. Thanks Pilates Pro!
If you are a certified Fitness Professional, you should certainly be getting your clothes at some sort of a discount. You’re the BEST advertising around.

Ahhhh, Wikipedia

Was perusing Wikipedia tonight. I love to see what’s being said about Pilates. No matter what the source.

Here’s my favorite excerpt on Pilates from Wikipedia:

Breathing
Joseph Pilates believed in circulating the blood so that it could awaken all the cells in the body and carry away the wastes related to fatigue. For the blood to do its work properly, he maintained, it has to be charged with oxygen and purged of waste gases through proper breathing. By this standard, if you stop breathing during exercise, there is an error in your practice. Full and thorough inhalation and exhalation are purportedly a part of every Pilates exercise. Pilates saw forced exhalation as the key to full inhalation. “Squeeze out the lungs as you would wring a wet towel dry,” he is reputed to have said.[citation needed] Pilates breathing should be done with concentration, control, and precision. Proper and effective breathing, practitioners assert, not only oxygenates the muscles, but also reduces tension in the upper neck and shoulders. Pilates breathing is described as a posterior lateral breathing, meaning that the practitioner is instructed to breathe deep into the back and sides of his or her rib cage. When practitioners exhale, they are instructed to note the engagement of their deep abdominal and pelvic floor muscles and maintain this engagement as they inhale. Pilates attempts to properly coordinate this breathing practice with movement, including breathing instructions with every exercise. Joseph Pilates stated, “Even if you follow no other instructions, learn to breathe correctly.

Oh Joseph, you were so right….and soooo soft spoken. lol.

toe tappin’ fun

I’ve resurected a favorite exercise, standing toe taps. not only are they short, sweet and to the point, they are highly functional.

If you have clients, or you yourself, have shin splints or issues with weak ankles, start adding them to your pilates work, you will see a distinct increase in strength.

Standing in parallel, just start tapping your toes! Alternating right and left continually and whatever speed you can manage. You can create a focus, like the hundred in your breath and your core in standing. To give a little different focus, do a second set turned out. It will work your anterior ribialis like nothing else :)

JUMP for joy!?

Sitting through as many hours of pilates training as I have in my lifetime, I start to evaluate like it’s a novel; Did the blurb engage me enough to read the first page? Did the first paragraph convince me to buy and read?
Meh. It’s a good beach read.
No thanks
Or YEAH! Love it, and I’m telling my friends to buy it….. that’s the response we’re after.

Today, I was at a Meh. Great information. Delivery, a little dry.

My husband shared with me a quote last night that I will get wrong. ‘It’s 20% What and 80% How’.

ahhh, words to live by.

I hate to be so hard to please. Maybe it’s my time in Group Fitness. My theater background flourishes in group fitness, content, plus a little sparkle and shine.

I want a little sparkle. I want real connection. I can fully say, I’m over the snotty pilates, over stoic shoes on, hands behind your back teaching. I want to feel like instructors passing along information are joyful and connected. I want the YEAH! factor. I want to feel spurred to clap at the end. There, I said it.

Our Jumpboard workshop at Woodland Hills Equinox for our pilates instructors yesterday was chock full of great jumpboard variations. It was a literal lexicon of pilates jumpboard. Love it, but I have to say, I wished it had been more stunning. Choreography is 20% the HOW is 80%……Yesterday, was a 60% to 40%.

Anyone can teach choreography. If you can do it with humor, compassion and joy? That’s what it takes to sell me.
