I can’t believe the summer has shot by!
So we took our fabulously offline vacation in Stanley, ID. Sawtooth Mountains, a great cabin (my Mother-in-laws which my son promptly named “Biba’s Cabinet’), a fox coming to dinner etc etc. I managed to relax, rest have an outdoor experience and not have any meltdown for lack of internet or phone access. Success! Until we reach our midway stop in Boise, ID. We stayed two nights at my Mother-in-laws house. YAY! Cute town, fun shopping, beautiful quiet scenery. Although at this point, we are a little cabin fevery amoungst the family members (10 total days together).
I decide to go for a run. Remind myself of my independence etc etc. There is a trail literally just outside the house. I get dressed, grab my ipod…..Mardee (my mother-in-law, who I adore) asks if I want a 3 mile loop. Why yes, that would be perfect. And for some reason she proceeds to give me directions and I proceed to pretend to understand.
In all my life I have run when I have traveled….15 miniutes or so out and 15 minutes back (on the average). I’ve never gotten lost and feel totally comfortable in strange places. This trip was not so much the same expereince.
30 minutes out I pause and think, hmmmm well, typically I run a 9 minute mile, 7 when I sprint, 10 when I walk….I walked part of this to look at things, I may have another 15 minutes before I find the end of my loop. Ok. No problem. 45 minutes out I realize I, the LA city kid, am officially lost on a paved path along a river. Now what? I have no phone, no money, I see no safety call boxes, there are tons of people….I guess I start asking for directions. I asked 5 people before any of them knew how to get me back to where I started. It ended up being an 18 year old kid on a bike who seemed vaguely amused at my lack of direction.
As I headed in the direction of what I hoped to genuinly be ‘back’ I went from annoyed, scared, to pissed off to whatever. I was suppsed to be back an hour ago to shower and meet cousins I had never met before. My husband and stepson were going to a movie whith them. In order to save embarrasment I hoped they had headed to the movie and not worried about me. I knew that was not the case. I’m annoyingly on time for most things. If I say 20 minutes to run an errand it’s 20 minutes. My husband was going to know something was wrong. If they sent someone to look for me how in the world would they find me? The trail was not uncomplicated, there were more than 2 dozen ‘options’ to take when running or walking. They’d never find me.
I am a grown woman. I can find my way back. It’s still light out. I have at least an hour.
I FINALLY made my way to the clearing in front of Marydee’s house (yes, it’s literally a clearing) an HOUR and a HAlF later. There is a welcoming committee of my son, my sister-in-law and my mother-in-law. I am both utterly embarrased and relieved.
I had made my way back, but in my absence they had sent out a search team on bicycles LOL. The cousins I had yet to meet and my husband. Now we had to round them up. My only response? “Seeeeee how I enspire people to fitness?”. Apparently I needed the attention that day.
In the end it was an amusing experience. My mother-in-law continues to apologize profusely which is really unnecessary. I continue to be in awe that I tried to follow the directions. I can hang out in the mountains for a week and be fine, but get completely, utterly lost on a paved trail. I am gifted.
I’ll be in Stanley, ID, in mountains that are so pretty they look fake.
So, be advised, if you are planning on coming to class August 15-22nd…I won’t be there.
Tuesday 1pm at Century City - Antony Ferguson is subbing for me, as well as Thursday 10am at Century City and 12pm at Santa Monica Equinox. My Friday morning class at Century City is still up for discussion. I’ll keep you posted.
Please, please, please, please, please…If you teach pilates don’t treat it like any other workout.
do not seperate upper body from lower bodye or core from the rest of your body :O with no disrespect meant, please save that for the gym floor.
Pilates is full body integrated work. CORE initiated, appendages get the goods without the stress or the focus.
After yesterdays auditions and evaluations in Newport Beach, this is all I have to say.
Is FULL tonight! I’m on vacation next week, rsvp for the week after.
And PLEASE bring your own mat!
I’m just cross posting. I considered writing my own review, but wny, Pilates Pro already handled it. Check it out. I love theses stats. You’ll need to scroll down just a bit.
At Casa Del Mar is just gorgeous and people have finally caught on. Our intitla thought was to limit the class at 12-15 attendees. last week, we had RSVP’s for 23!
although this week is full, I challange you to see who can get to class NOT next week (I’m on vacation and I will post who is subbing as soon as they are confirmed) but the week after here.
It takes me too long to update the blog sometimes. I know and I’m sorry. I don’t know that really good things come our of my mouth or brain everyday. Why force it? Not to mention my time lately has been spent audtitioning and evaluationg instructors and programs in the last few months. Had I blogged everything I saw, you would have thought I was the worst pessimist. Not so. However, there is a lot to do out there in the universe of pilates and fitness.
When should I share the info, when should I not? That is part of my journey. We definatley have a ways to go in the realm of fitness where pilates is concerned. I find my job to be more education and explanation that I often care for it to be. What is it that Pilates really does? Why should I do pilates INSTEAD of something else? Why should I add pilates to what i already do? All questions i can continually answering for potential clients, General Managers, Assistant General Managers and Membership advisors…..but also for actual pilates instructors.
And not because the instructors aren’t any good, Because we have a reached a place in our certificaiton and training process where there is a gap the size of the Grand Canyon and we need a bridge. I feel like I’m talking that bridge into existance. One brick at a time. not efficient and tiring.
My very first post discussed the version of ‘Snotty Pilates’ that still exits in the world. Their vision being ‘ we only do pilates and we only do it this way’. They like the idea of elitism that can still accompany the work. They tend to not name any real anaotmy when cueing (how, i’m not sure). They tend to avoid variation and science. ….hmmmm….intersting.
How to bridhe what I teach and what I think really exits. Pialtes is just another form of body movement. That’s it. It’s a way of approaching m ovement from a thoughtful, articulate, functional manner that makes everything else you do better.
It’ balances.
It IS and CAN BE accessible to everyone. In a land of Yogi’s (SoCal) why are students or potential students not understanding the beauty and power of a mind-body connective that is totally active? ‘Cause no ones articulating it properly. Instructors are still stuck in their ivory toewr of a studio and ‘HOPING’ clients love them. They teach them, then cross their fingers and hope the client buys and comes back. NO! can anyone get me a copy of The Secret for them;) Show them what pilates does, explain, and EXPECT them to train. Pilates works. It takes time, but there is science under all the layers of etheral movement.
As instructor we must value the knowledge and body work we have and constantly fill it in with other pieces that our certifications are lacking (clear anatomy and science as it pertains to fitness adn generating trackable results).
phew. That’s why you haven’t heard fmor me in a bit. I’ve been talking and evaluting for weeks at a time.
Pointing out the weeks spots, giving recommendation and accolation. Treating the region and each pilates studio just like a client. They could listen and exceed expectation or they could ignore. Time will only tell.
My goal is to open pilates to an audience that thinks it’s too stuffy, too type-A, too elite and show them Pilates is the thing that will lead their body to what they want and need it to be. We are connecting people’at their core’. On a global perspective their are soo many places to go with that.
Start with a proper crunch. Start with a proper hamstring stretch. Go from there and see where it takes you.
There are goo instructors out there. There are limitless clients. GO PLAY!
